Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace
Porn is one of the greatest issues we face in the church. It affects men and women of all ages, including pastors. Even worse, people who use porn are reluctant to admit that they have a problem. As they struggle alone and in secret, they face even more defeat and enter a cycle of greater bondage to sin and shame.
I know. I’ve sat with the men and women in my office. I’ve seen the failed attempts at using accountability groups to gain victory. I’ve watched pastors lose their ministries as a result of their porn addiction.
We can’t fight this on our own strength. That’s why I’m grateful for a new book by Heath Lambert called Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace. There are at least three reasons I’m grateful for this book:
- It’s steeped in Scripture, accurately applying God’s truth to a perplexing problem.
- It’s rooted in the gospel, and God’s forgiving and transforming grace.
- It is full of practical, pastoral wisdom on how to address the challenge of porn in one’s life.
Lambert covers topics such as the role of the gospel, repentance, confession, and accountability. He gets past the behaviours and deals with the underlying heart issues, such as arrogance and ingratitude. He leads us to see that Jesus is the ultimate answer to a porn issue, and he unpacks this so that it becomes real rather than a platitude. He also offers some wise counsel to families and friends of those struggling with pornography.
Up until now I haven’t had a go-to book to give out to guys who are struggling with porn, or their friends and families. That’s changed. I will be recommending this book from now on. I recommend it not just to those who are struggling with porn, but with those who want to help others who are struggling. I encourage you to get it.
