I’m no longer naïve. I’m not surprised when I hear of a Christian leader falling into sin. I have, however, learned three important lessons on how to guard my own heart when I hear of another leader who’s fallen.
I’m grateful for the sweet spot, when you get to enjoy some of the benefits of youth and the benefits of wisdom.
A Nobody in One Country, Famous in the Next
It turns out it’s possible to live a completely ordinary life in one country and to be famous in another.
I used to count up. Counting up means counting how many years you’ve been alive, how many years you’ve been doing something. For instance, “We’ve been married ten years now,” or, “I’ve been a pastor for 20 years.”
I still do this, but a few years ago I noticed I was counting down a lot more.

D.A. Carson has said that the list of qualifications for elders is “remarkable for being unremarkable.” They’re the same traits that should be present in the life of every believer.
We need more unremarkable Christians.
Years have passed since that difficult period in our lives. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anybody. I am grateful, though, for the lessons that God taught us in that difficult year.
A Debt of Gratitude to Arnold Dallimore
We owe a debt of gratitude to Dallimore. An Ontario pastor gave the world a gift at great cost to himself, and we’re better for it. I pray that God raises up more like him.
Overwhelmed? Me too. But we don’t need to be. We can remember our limits, find comfort and security in God’s love, and invite others to do so too. It’s a much better way to live.
Small churches aren’t failures, and small church pastors aren’t second class. Praise God for the beauty of all kinds of churches, including the small ones.
